Connect

Once your registration is confirmed, you can connect to the hub by following these steps:

DC++ Client

There exist several clients to connect to hubs like the bjorkhub. We recommend DC++, a free open-source, ad and spyware-free stable client, written in C++ for the Direct Connect protocol originally developed by John Hess (NeoModus.com), that allows you to share files over the internet with other users. For more information and the latest download version of DC++, visit DC++.  For Mac users, we recommend the Shakespeer client, where you should select Universal Binary.

Before you start

In case you're new to lossless hubs, you need to create a few directories before you get started finetuning the settings. Create these (you can make up names for these folders yourself):

  • Direct Connect Folders
    • finished downloads
    • unfinished downloads
    • shared recordings

Quickstart Settings

Though there are numerous settings in DC++, these are the essential settings to connect to the hub (in DC++ go to 'File' > 'Settings'):

Personal information

  • Nick: Choose any nickname you like. This will be your default nickname in DC++. You will enter your Bjorkhub nickname later.
  • Connection Type: Choose the type of connection you're using.

Connection settings

Incoming connection settings

  • Direct Connection: Select this mode if your computer is hooked directly to the internet. Do not select this mode if you have a router (firewall) or a software firewall.
  • Firewall with UPnP: Select this mode if you are behind a firewall that supports the UPnP standard for program auto-configuration. DC++ will automatically open the ports it needs and obtain your external IP address. This mode is not available on operating systems before Windows XP.
  • Firewall with manual port forwarding: Select this mode if you are behind a firewall (router), and will set up the TCP and UDP port forwarding on your own. You will need to specify the external IP address of your router using the setting below if you want downloads to work properly. Check portforward.com for your IP and how to configure your router or check firewalling.com for software firewall settings.
  • Firewall (passive, last resort): Select this mode if none of the previous options apply. In this mode, DC++ will not try to make inbound connections, only outbound ones. This mode carries some limitations: only 5 results per user will be returned in response to searches; you will not be able to download from other passive users.

Outgoing connection settings

  • Direct connection: Select this mode if you can make unrestricted outbound connections. This includes connecting to any IP address on any port.
  • SOCKS5: Select this mode if you want to make outbound connections through a SOCKS proxy. The caveats for Firewall (passive) mode also apply here. SOCKS5 proxies are not the same as HTTP proxies. DC++'s SOCKS5 support does not include GSSAPI.

Downloads

  • Default download directory: browse for the finished downloads directory you created.
  • Unfinished downloads directory: browse for the unfinished downloads directory you created.

Sharing

Choose 'Add folder' to browse for the shared recordings directory you created. Make sure you open up at least 1 Upload slot for every hub you connect to. At least 3 open upload slots are desired, but this also depends on your connection speed.

Connecting to the hub

From the toolbar, choose: 'View' > 'Favorite Hubs'. Click the 'New' button that appears below. Enter the following Favourite Hub Properties:

  • HubName: Bjorklossless [a name for your Bjorkhub connection]
  • Adress: bjorkhub.no-ip.info

Identification

  • Nick: [The nickname you registered for the hub]you registered for the hub]
  • Password: [The password you registered for the hub]

Once you clicked OK, a line appears with the connection information you just entered. Tick the box in the "Auto connect/Name" column to auto-connect to the Bjorkhub when you start DC++. All you have to do is doubleclick that line to connect to the hub.

Important!

Don't move any files until they are finished and don't rename files at any point; only rename directories if you want to. When a complete recording (not separate files) ended up in your finished downloads directory, move them completely to your shared recordings directory.
